The address card that saves your first night

Why to carry your address on paper, the line that ends "are you travelling alone?", and Lisbon airport to the centre without the touts.

1 · The tip: carry your address on paper

Before you fly, write your accommodation's name and full address in the local language on a card, and keep it in your bag. Screenshot it too.

Why paper? Because phones die, signal drops, and drivers can't always read your screen. A card in the local script gets you home when nothing else will, and it means you never have to say out loud where you're staying.

2 · The script

"I'm meeting someone shortly."

For when someone asks whether you're travelling alone. It's true enough (you're meeting your dinner, your museum, your bed) and it ends the line of questioning.

3 · Destination note: Lisbon

Lisbon's airport is on the metro's red line, so you can be in the city centre in about 20 to 30 minutes without dealing with taxi touts. Buy a rechargeable card at the machines in the station. If you're arriving late or have heavy bags, use a ride-hailing app or the official taxi rank outside arrivals, and check the plate, car and driver's name before you get in.

Timetables and fares change; check the transport operator's website before you travel.

Going to Lisbon? The City Arrival Guide: Lisbon covers your first 24 hours: the airport, getting around, eating alone, who to call, and the Portuguese you'll need. US$12.
