How we make our guides
You're trusting us with decisions about your safety. Here's exactly how our guides and toolkits are written, checked and kept up to date.
Who writes and reviews them
Every guide and toolkit is written by Claire Bennett, our founder and editor, and reviewed by our risk and safety adviser, Richard G. Prouse, whose professional background is in aviation and maritime security. His review checks that the advice is practical, proportionate and safe to act on.
How we decide what to say
- Practical over frightening. We focus on small habits and clear decisions you can actually use when you're tired and somewhere new.
- Your decision, always. We explain options and trade-offs; we never tell you a place or situation is "safe".
- No stereotypes. We don't blame or generalise about places or people.
Sources and fact-checking
- Health, legal and consular points are based on official or primary sources, such as the CDC, government travel advice services and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, and we cite them in our toolkits.
- Statistics are only used when we can name the source and date.
- Destination facts (transport, phone numbers, opening hours) are checked against current sources and dated, because they change.
Keeping guides current
We review our guides and toolkits regularly and update them when rules, services or best practice change. Each toolkit carries an edition number, and city guides show when their facts were last checked.
Independence
We don't sell gear, take affiliate commission or accept sponsored placements. We're funded only by the toolkits you choose to buy.
How we use technology
We use digital tools, including AI, to help with research, drafting and design. Every guide is edited and checked before it's published. Photographs of people on this site, including Claire's portraits, are AI-generated, and we say so.
What our guides are not
Our guides are general information to help you plan your own travel. They are not medical, legal or security advice, and they can't guarantee anyone's safety. In an emergency, contact local emergency services.
